Charl and Sabine Stols have been invited by East African Safari Legend Alex Walker to be photographers in residence at two of his iconic Serian camps in February 2020… what an honour!

They will be spending the first two weeks in the Southern Serengeti in Ndutu which will be home to the millions of migratory wildebeest and zebra who seek out these luscious grasslands during calving season.

The second half of the month will see Charl and Sabine relocate North to The Masai Mara in Kenya where they will be focussing on the big cats. With the majority of larger herbivores being further South, the cats have to work that much harder and tend to be more active at this time of year.

You are invited to join them in either location (or indeed both) and with it being a residency rather than a set departure the choice of dates and length of stay is entirely up to you.

Location Overview

Alex Walker’s Serian South is in the Ngorongoro Conservation area in the southernmost tip of the short-grass plains.

It comprises six spacious tents decorated in a nostalgic colonial style with all the creature comforts you could desire. Serian camps have a well-earned reputation for understated class and exceptional service.

The location couldn’t be better, and you will spend your days out photographing with Charl and Sabine. On most days you may choose to spend longer out in the field and so packed lunches will be organised so you can make the most of your time there. When back at camp there will be group editing sessions.

Charl and Sabine will be there for two weeks so you can choose however long you would like to spend with them. We would suggest a minimum of 5 to 6 nights at the camp.

Following the first two weeks Charl and Sabine will then head North across the border and into the Masai Mara where they will base themselves for the remainder of their residency.

Their new home is the stunning and authentic Nkorombo Mobile Camp constructed annually in along the Mara River by Alex Walker’s Serian. Comprising only five tents, each with flushing loos and hot bucket showers, the camp has a true feeling of the safari style of days gone by!

This area is big cat central and there will be daily game drives with Charl and Sabine into the Masai Mara Reserve. A majority of the drives will be full day excursions with delicious picnic lunch out in the wilds.

As the majority of the Wildebeest and Zebra that form the mass of the migration are further South you will find that there are fewer other vehicles around and more importantly the cats are having to work harder and are therefore more active throughout the day.

Back at camp there will be plenty of time for editing sessions or just relaxing with a nice cold drink enjoying the sights and sounds of Africa at its purest.

Best of both worlds?

If you are keen to experience both the Southern Serengeti and The Masai Mara with Charl and Sabine, we have a special package with four night at each in the middle of their residency. Please see the dates and rates tab for details. With the camps being very small there are obviously limited spaces on this particular combination.

Please note that seeing as this is a residency and Charl and Sabine will based there for the whole month you can join them whenever you want and for however long you want. Below we have done sample package prices for a 6 night stay at either Serian South or Nkorombo in The Mara to give you an idea.

Below are listed are some of our preferred destinations and we can add these to your itinerary with ease. We only use hand picked places that we have experienced and know to be up to our standards.

  • Samburu – Northern Kenya and home to the endangered 5. We often add this to our Mara Migration itineraries.
  • Ngorongoro Crater – Right next to Ndutu is this amazing bucket list destination. Easy to add on to the first part of the residency in Tanzania at Serian South.
  • Amboseli – A beautiful wide open reserve with Mount Kilimanjaro as a back drop.
  • Rwanda – getting across to the see the gorillas in Rwanda is pretty simple either from the Serengeti or The Masai Mara
  • Zanzibar – After all the excitement of the safari you could always rewards yourself with a bit of downtime on the beach. Great scuba diving to be had!

Charl Stols

Charl Stols born and raised in South Africa. He began his journey in photography when he took a position on a cruise vessel as a resident photographer in 2003. The cruise ship was not only the place he discovered a passion for photography but also the place where Charl met his wife Sabine who is since sharing that passion with him.

Being from South Africa it was always a dream to become a wildlife photographer which is why we spent most of our vacations in the National Parks of Africa. Charl and Sabine were very fortunate to make their dream come true when they were offered positions as photographic hosts by Pangolin Photo Safaris in 2015.

Sabine Stols

Born and raised in Germany, Sabine Stols used to be quite the city girl. All that changed when Sabine took a summer job on a cruise vessel where she met her South African husband Charl. Travelling the world together for several years as a photography and videography team they both fell in love with the diversity and richness of nature.

Being most passionate about wildlife photography, they spent most of their vacation in the National Parks of South Africa. Lucky for them, the passion became a dream job in 2015 when they were offered positions as photographic hosts by Pangolin Photo Safaris.

Based in Kasane, Botswana they now guide anyone enthusiastic about photography and nature on photographic safaris and workshops in Chobe National Park and other wild places of Africa.
