Entry for submission to The Pangolin Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2020 is free.

Submission opens from 1st July 2020 to midnight (PST) on the 14th July 2020.

Participants are allowed to enter one image in either the amateur or professional Pangolin Wildlife Photographer of the Year categories.

The image must be of a wild animal in its natural environment (not captive, trained or domesticated). No landscapes, images of plants, star photography or human portraits, please.

Both amateur and professional wildlife photographers are allowed to enter images in their respective categories. Images that make the shortlist will undergo due diligence. Any image submitted to the wrong category will be disqualified.

Professional photographers

A professional photographer is one that derives a significant proportion (over 25%) of their annual income from wildlife photography. This includes selling stock imagery or leading (and teaching) on wildlife photography tours, classes and workshops.

Professional photographers from other photographic genres, such as a wedding, food, fashion etc are eligible to enter the amateur category.

Images must be submitted without watermarks to allow for impartial judging to take place. Image files (jpeg, png or tiff) should not exceed 5meg in size.

Judging will commence on July 15th and end on July 31st. During that time the owners of the images that have been shortlisted for due diligence and final consideration will be notified. We will then request the original (pre-post-production or editing) images to be submitted to aid with the final judgement. Failure to provide an original image may lead to disqualification.

The results will be announced on YouTube on the evening of Saturday 1st August at 9 pm (Central Africa Time). The winners will also be notified by email.

All prizes (safaris and vouchers) must be redeemed for travel starting no later than June 1st 2022.

Who can enter the competition?

The competition is open to all amateur AND professional photographers aged 18 or over from any country in the world.

This Pangolin Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition is divided into two categories – Amateur and Professional Wildlife Photographer of the Year.

A professional photographer is someone who derives a significant proportion (over 25%) of their annual income from wildlife photography. Whether that be by selling stock imagery or leading wildlife photography tours, classes and workshops.

Any Individual employed by Pangolin Photo Safaris, or their immediate family members, may NOT enter the competition.

One image will be allowed per entrant. Attempting to enter more than one image will have both or all of the duplicate entries removed from the contest.

Image Submission

The Image submitted to the Pangolin Wildlife Photographer of the Year must adhere to the following conditions:

The submitted image must have been taken in 2019. The metadata of the file will be inspected to ensure qualification.

All images should be a faithful representation of the original scene in the natural world. Composite images will not be allowed. Post-production adjustments can be used but excessive use will count against the image’s overall standing with the judges.

The judges may request the original image file for review when the shortlist has been completed. This will precede their judgement and declaration of the Amateur and Professional Pangolin Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2020.

Please note. An image that has previously won a national or international nature photography competition prior to The Pangolin Wildlife Photographer of the Year will NOT be considered.

If chosen as a winning image and later found to be in contravention of this rule it will be disqualified.

The judges reserve the right to refuse photos that they deem unsuitable for whatever reason they see fit. The image must be the sole property of the submitter and have no third-party publishing rights/restriction attached to them.

The image must have been taken by the submitter. All images must be submitted as jpeg, png or tiff files without a watermark.

The judging process is conducted blindly so all watermarked images will be rejected. Once the winners have been selected competition organisers will delete all the submitted images from their servers or cloud-based storage.

The owners of the winning images give permission for their image to be used for the purposes of promoting the Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition. All entrants give permission to Pangolin Photo Safaris to display their image on the Pangolin Photo Safaris website.

The winners also agree to allow Pangolin to display their credited image in the gallery of The Pangolin Chobe Hotel.

Baiting

No images that have used live or dead bait when capturing the image will be allowed in this photo competition. If the judges suspect that a subject has been coerced, baited or harassed the image will be disqualified from the competition.

Agreement or participation

By entering an image into this photo competition, the participant agrees to and is bound to the rules set out above. Entrants agree to have their names added to the Pangolin Photo Safaris email newsletter database. This will be the primary method of communication and updates.

Judges

The judging of The Pangolin Wildlife Photographer of the Year will be carried out by The Pangolin Photo Hosts and Directors.
The judges’ decision is final, binding and non-negotiable.

Can I enter more than one image?

No. You can only enter one image in either the professional or amateur category. Anyone attempting to enter more than one image will be disqualified from the contest.

What format should my image be in?

We have had to set a file size limit to 5mb as we have to upload all the images and make them downloadable by the photo hosts in Botswana – where the internet access is not very robust. Maximum dimensions should not exceed 2048 pixels along the longest side whether in portrait or landscape orientation.

Why can’t I submit images with my watermark?

The judges of the photo competition are the Pangolin Photo Hosts based in Botswana and to be fair to all entrants they will be judged blind. All entries will be sent to them to choose the winners, runner up and highly commended images.

What will happen to my images after the contest ends?

As soon as the competition ends, we will then delete all the images that were submitted.

Can I enter if I am a professional wildlife photographer?

Yes, you can. If you derive any significant amount (over 25%) of your annual income from stock images of wildlife or lead workshops or safaris then you are permitted to enter the professional category.

If you are any other type of professional photographer (e.g., fashion, fine art, sport, architecture, food, etc) then you are permitted to enter the amateur category.

Due diligence will be performed on the owner of the winning images and the decision to allow or disallow the image resulting in this investigation will be for the directors of Pangolin Photo Safaris to make. This decision will be final and binding. Negotiations or discussions will not be entered into. If an image wins the amateur category and it is later discovered that the photographer is deemed to be a professional wildlife photographer in the eyes of the Directors then the prize will instead be awarded to the runner up in the same category.

I can’t upload my image. Can you help?

If you are struggling to upload your image or enter the competition please email marketing@pangolinphoto.com and we will assist where we can.

What if I am not able to travel before the safaris and vouchers expire.

All of the safaris and photo safari vouchers must be redeemed for travel before the 1st June 2022. if you are not able to travel then the safaris and the vouchers will be forfeited. The winners must travel themselves and in the case of the professional prize of the exclusive charter of the houseboat, you must host the charter. Neither safari nor the vouchers may be resold or traded with a third party.

Will you be showing all the images in one place?

I’m afraid that just isn’t possible as we have so many entries for each category and as per the rules they are without watermarks.
